March is the month that we honor the women of this world. I had the luxury of a one-on-one conversation with an easily recognizable woman throughout Dauphin and Cumberland counties, Patty Kim, which she has represented for the past decade. She is popular on the committees for always fighting for truth and justice. After interviewing State Representative Patty Kim, I truly believe she is the Democratic Party’s next woman to climb into the upper echelons of the national government. Representative Patty Kim, remember the name.
Representative Kim immediately grabbed my attention by opening the conversation with a scripture verse. She is a woman of great faith and principles. When asked about her passionate faith, Representative Kim quickly stated that it derives from her parents, whom she also spoke passionately about. Patty Kim’s values are sacred, and she does not shy away from sharing them. Kim is equally unashamed of her Asian heritage while also holding the constitution of the United States of America in very high esteem.
Representative Patty Kim’s answers were intentional and careful. As the topic of the Capitol attack surfaced, Kim stated, “I was horrified watching January 6th unfold”. She was genuinely disturbed, recounting the day no one thought would occur. “I never thought such a thing could ever happen to our great nation’s Capital. My heart goes out to the heroic law enforcement who stood in the face of adversity,” says Representative Patty Kim. She reserved any political backlash for any of her colleagues across the aisle. Elected Official Kim’s professional attitude reflects her demeanor. When asked what she thought of the current state of American democracy, she acknowledged her fears. Kim admitted she was “worried.” Nevertheless, she believes in the democratic process and, again, the constitution
As the conversation continued, Representative Kim’s journalistic background was fully displayed. While asking one question, I immediately associated her with a Whitney Houston classic, ‘I’m Every Woman.’ The list of Representative Kim’s accomplishments dating back to her service on the Harrisburg City Council reads like a woman on a mission. She is consistent, and in her own words, she is “addicted to helping people.” Representative Patty Kim credits her father, quoting his inspirational words, “Patty, don’t focus on moving up; focus on the people. If you do that, they will promote you when you’re ready.” Her father is a wise man and a registered Republican. Therefore, it is easy to see how she balances her temperament and integrity to be a woman of substance. She is a woman of conviction and has earned both the Democratic and Republican party’s respect.
When asked what she would say to encourage young women to participate in safeguarding our democracy, without hesitation, she replied, “Get involved, you have a voice, and we’re listening.”
Representative Kim is passionate about the other committees that she serves on. Representative Kim makes her living helping the people; she is adamant about staying active and remains grateful by reminding people that she is in her present position because of them. Kim’s pursuit of helping progress and not regressing society is a daily fight. Representative Patty Kim and many other women are due their deserved acknowledgments for their great strides in the last 100 years.
Representative Kim has made great use of her platform in her time of service and was quick to add, “Having an avenue to the masses is a blessing, and I will never use it for self-propulsion or abuse the peoples’ trust.” I admired her response because I believed her. Representative Kim’s honest and reliable ways lead her staff and the people to believe in her.
With Representative Kim’s promise to serve with integrity, the Democratic Party should recognize that she is a Nancy Pelosi (fierce), a Kamala Harris (groundbreaking), and a Liz Cheney (honest) all rolled into one. Therefore, the future of the honorable State Representative Patty Kim is genuinely bright.
